I’m Kirsty, a freelance copywriter who specialises in telling stories that matter.

After two decades working in communications, PR and journalism, I know what makes great copy.

As an expert in charity communications, I’ve spent thousands of hours crafting stories that inspire people to take action. Whatever the job, I’ll obsess over every last word – it’s how I’ve built a reputation for quality and attention to detail.

My background

I’ve always loved stories. I can still remember the thrill of choosing a book from my local library and discovering a whole new world inside it.

This is how I learned that words are a kind of magic…

They can transport you to a different time or place. They can plant new ideas. They can make you feel things, even convince you to act.

My first paid writing job was as a local reporter. In the newsroom, I learned some important lessons:

  • Even when space is limited, you can still produce a story that packs a punch.

  • The driest of topics can be made interesting if you dig for the right detail.

  • You don’t need to be a subject expert to write about something, as long as you can talk to someone who is.

Those lessons were invaluable when I moved into communications for a medical research charity. Working on fundraising content, awareness campaigns, annual reports and more, I learned about what inspires people to support a cause, and the importance of a strong, consistent message.

My specialist focus

I work a lot with charities, though not exclusively. I seek out clients who are putting something good into the word – through the causes they champion, their products and services, or the way they work.

If that sounds like you, I’d love to hear from you!

I’ve worked on everything from email journeys to fundraising appeals, websites to in-depth policy reports. But I especially relish the challenge of turning a complex, nuanced subject into something compelling, clear and human.

How I work

When I take on a new client, I like to poke around under the hood before I start writing. I’ll ask lots of questions about your organisation, your goals and, most importantly, your audience.

Good copywriting starts with understanding the reader. So I want to know as much as I can about who they are, what motivates them – and what turns them off.

I work collaboratively, with plenty of opportunities for feedback. Through this process, I pride myself on delivering high quality work that really fits your brief.

I’m based in Cambridge, my native city, and if you’re in the area I’m happy to meet in person. But I work with clients across the UK, so wherever you are, I’d love to talk about how we could work together.
