Storytelling: 60 years of helping displaced people
I worked with Migrant Help to tell the stories of refugees, people seeking asylum and former staff from its 60-year history, to support an awareness campaign tied to the charity’s anniversary.
The goal:To mark the milestone, the team wanted to showcase stories spanning six decades to demonstrate the value migrants bring to the UK. While it was important to show Migrant Help’s role in supporting displaced people, the priority was to tell inspiring and celebratory stories in which the individuals took centre stage, focusing on their humanity.
The approach: I worked with the team to identify clients, former clients and former staff with stories to tell, prioritising people from different parts of the world, with varied backgrounds and reasons for coming to the UK.
Throughout, I sought to capture each interviewee’s unique voice, providing the charity with a complete story that could be adapted for multiple purposes – from social updates to blog posts and media pitches. Each case study included quotes highlighting the hopes and dreams of people across the world, to show how much we have in common.
The result: The stories were invaluable to Migrant Help in its anniversary year: they were used on its website, in pitches to the media, for press interviews and as impactful collateral for a key campaign launch event. Crucially, this support allowed the charity’s comms team to devote its resources to ensuring their events and publicity work ran smoothly.
“The stories you collected are now an invaluable ongoing resource that we can use in multiple ways in future publicity.
“You were a delight to work with. Responsive, completely understanding of the brief, great at meeting deadlines, flexible and the stories that you provided were absolutely what we had hoped for. Thank you!”
